I love old house renovation!

One of the reasons I am an architect is because I want to help older houses be all that they can be. When it comes time for me to choose a new house and a new project with my husband, also an architect, we end up falling for houses that need us.

We had a couple really old houses in mind as we began our search. How old is too old to become a smart home? If we adopt an old house, a 300 year old house, do we have a responsibility to preserve the house rather than make big changes? I had so many questions about old house renovation, and surprisingly few people care to discuss this subject with me for hours at a time.

I thought about Dave Rademacher, who had been my guest on Episode 65 – Kitchens and Baths for Old Houses. I decided to hire him to answer my questions and be my guide through this potentially exciting process and in the meantime record our conversation to share with others who might be interested in adopting old houses.
